Jawad Asradi, widely recognized by his stage names Pause Flow or simply Pause, is a preeminent Moroccan rapper and songwriter. Born in Imouzzer Kandar, a town nestled between Fes and Ifrane in 1995, Asradi has carved a distinct niche in the Moroccan hip-hop scene through his profound lyrical depth and intellectual approach. He is celebrated for seamlessly weaving philosophical musings, political commentary, and the rich cultural heritage of the Atlas regions into his verses, delivered masterfully in both Darija (Moroccan Arabic) and Central Atlas Tamazight. His artistry has positioned him as one of the most streamed and influential figures in Moroccan rap. Asradi's journey in rap commenced in 2009, although his official online presence and releases began in 2013. In his formative years, he co-founded the group 'Halfin,' which quickly gained notoriety for its series of impactful freestyle clashes. The group's dynamic work laid early groundwork for their recognition. However, in 2015, the 'Halfin' collective disbanded, leading Pause to embark on a solo career. On November 20, 2025, he was arrested in Sefrou on charges of insulting public officials performing their duties, specifically related to the lyrics of more than ten of his rap songs. During his pre-trial detention, the court of first instance notably refused to grant him bail. This incident sparked a significant wave of support, leading to a petition signed by over 4,680 artists and civil society members, including prominent Moroccan rappers like ElGrandeToto and Khtek. The petition fervently called for his release, an end to prosecutions targeting artistic expression, and the establishment of a new legal framework to safeguard creativity without the imposition of custodial penalties, explicitly referencing Article 25 of the Moroccan Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression. On December 25, 2025, after a month in pre-trial detention, Asradi was released from prison, having been sentenced by the Sefrou Court of First Instance to a three-month suspended prison term and a fine of 2,000 dirhams. His case subsequently became a focal point in the national discourse on artistic freedom, particularly as it unfolded closely after the Gen-Z protests in Morocco. Public figures, including MP Fatima Tamni, weighed in, with Tamni submitting a written question to the Minister of Culture, Mehdi Bensaid, criticizing the rapper's imprisonment as indicative of an 'intimidation policy targeting Generation Z' and a 'regression of rights and freedoms.'
